Let's set me up for disappointment!

Alright, so I appreciate everyone's comments about not worrying about JET and focusing on the other things that are going on in my life, but tomorrow has the potential to be a pretty big day (Not as big as watching the Red Sox beat up on the Devil Rays from right field this afternoon, but pretty big none the less).

All of the paperwork to accept the short list and alternate positions were due on Friday, which means that there is a possibility that I could get moved up as early as tomorrow.

Let's keep those fingers crossed!

The Consulate received my paperwork

Dear Mr. Villagomez

I certainly received your alternate reply form along with a copy of your passport.

Well, that is certainly good to know. Here's to hoping that some shortlisters forget to mail in their paperwork (fingers crossed).

Hotel accomadations in Tokyo

I found out that we will be staying here during Tokyo orientation. The hotel is right next to the Shinjuku train station on the JR Yamanote line...which is two stops away from the Harajuku station. Harajuku girls, anyone? Love, Angel, Music, Baby?

Anybody else have a JET blog?

I want to add a section linking to some JET blogs, but I don't want to link to people that I've never met. Are there any bloggers out there that would like me to link to them? All that I ask in return is that you link to me. Comment on this post and I'll add your blog as soon as I have time...I do work 7 days a week after all.

On another note:

Do any bloggers out there ever check out blogshares.com? I know that it is a total waste of time, but I like to check it out every once in a while to see what my blogs are worth. According to them this blog is worth $2,547.14 and my food blog is worth $2,509.49. I'm not quite sure how the equation works, but you basically go up in value with every website that links to yours.

What else? More waiting!

My paperwork is in the mail. To all of those shortlisted JETS (except for Emily): Don't send in your paperwork! I want to go to Japan!

When will the waiting end?

The paper work to accept the JET position is due this Friday (6 days from now). That means that I could get an email as early as next Monday informing me of my acceptance into JET. Keep those fingers crossed!

Programs other than JET

Since there is a possibility that I won't get into JET, I took a little time to research other English teaching programs in Japan. The two most popular ones seem to be Aeon and Nova.

I was a little more than disappointed with my findings. It looks like both programs pay less, offer less vacation, and make you work longer hours. Neither company has interview locations in Florida, either. Aeon even requires that you pay them a deposit once you are accepted.

I'm going to look into it a little bit more, but it looks like it is going to have to be JET or no Japan.

In case you had any questions about your place on the Alternate List:

For Your Information>

According to the strict regulation of the JET program, we are not allowed to inform alternates what their rank is on the alternate list.

Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you very much for understanding.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me anytime.

P.S. The program package has been sent out. You should be receiving by 4/11.

Sincerely

Disappointed or optimistic?

At least I wasn't rejected. That is what I keep telling myself. There were plenty of people who went through the application process, interviewed, counted the days until April 4th, and then got a letter letting them know that they would not be going to Japan. At least I'm not one of those people.

I just have to wait. There's really nothing that I can do to improve my chances of getting into JET. I'll either find out this summer that I am moving up to the short list or I won't. If I am not moved up, I will just have to find some other way to get to Japan. Emily and I have discussed the possibility of one of us not getting into JET and now it looks like possibility has the chance to become reality. There have to be other English teaching jobs out there. I am going to start researching other programs. I just hope that their application process isn't as elaborate as JET's.

I remain optimistic that I will be upgraded (although I took a couple of days to mope around). I'm actually pretty confident that I will get in, now my major concern is that Emily and I won't be placed in the same prefecture. That would sort of defeat the whole reason for going to Japan in the first place. We want to go together, so that we can have an adventure together.

They're not talkin'

I called the Miami consulate yesterday and asked to speak with the JET coordinator. I was transfered to his office, and after a few minutes on hold, he picked up the phone. I asked if he could tell me where I was on the Alternate list. He said every-so-politely, "No." I told him that on the Internet I had seen that the Atlanta Consulate was telling alternates their place in line and he simply replied that he was aware of that and that it was JET policy not to give out that type of information. Bummer.

...and the waiting continues.

I'm still in the dark

I called the consulate in Miami three times yesterday and my call went directly to voicemail each time. I also sent an email, but they haven't responded. I also recieved a couple of private messages from Big Daikon and the Yahoo group asking me how I asked what my place on the alternate list was. The message I left went something like this, "Hi, this is Angelo V., I am on the alternate list for the JET program this year, I'm just calling to ask if you can tell what my place on the alternate list is? I have read on the Internet that several other consulates are making this information available? Thank you, you can call me back at (555) 123-1234."

I'll try calling again later today during business hours.

I got wait listed

Dear Mr. Angelo V.

This e-mail is to inform you that you have been selected as an alternate ALT short-list candidate for the 2005 JET Program.

You will be informed as to whether a candidacy on the short-list has become available by the end of September and upon receiving confirmation if you, at that stage, still wish to participate on the Program, placement will proceed. After a contracting organization has been selected, you will be informed of the name of the prefecture or designated city to which you are assigned. Every effort will be made to satisfy your posting preferences. However, please understand that this will not always be possible. If you do not hear anything from the JET Program Office by the end of September this means that a short-list candidacy position did not become available.

Disappointment ensues and the waiting continues. This really makes things difficult. I might or I might not get into JET now. Emily assures me that I will, but I am not as optimistic. I am going to call the consulate during business hours today to see what number I am on the list of alternates. I'm hoping that I'm in the top 10. If I am number 57 out of 60 I think I might die.

Oh, goodness...

People all over the country are getting their letters...a few Los Angeles SNAIL MAIL notifications have even been received!

I'm tempted to run over to my campus box right this second, even though I know it would probably be pointless...

...maybe I'll check it tonight on my way out to the bar. I'll need a few drinks either way to quell the anxiety!

The results are trickling in

There is a thread on Big Daikon for the Atlanta applicants. They recieved thier notifications via email yesterday afternoon, even though they were told that they would find out on April 4th. That makes me kind of nervous. That might mean that I could get my notification any time between now and Monday (bites nails).
