Maug Needs Beautify CNMI

marine debrisA few of the beaches on Maug were covered in marine debris, mostly old fishing gear.

discarded fishing gearI'm sure there are thousands of pounds of marine debris on these beaches. Whenever we do our Beautify CNMI cleanups on Saipan, I am always amazed at home much trash we collect on seemingly clean beaches. It is always shocking how big the piles of trash can get when you take all the trash and put it in one place.

I'm got photographic evidence of marine debris from several of the northern islands now. Most of it is fishing gear. It might be time to write a marine debris removal proposal.

How does all that debris get there? Does it just get washed up or do visitors leave their trash there?
