It is nearly 2012, this blog just turned 7 years old, and I just went for a four mile run. I just got an email from Amazon.com letting me know that $10 had been deposited into my bank account. You see those ads for DVDs? If you follow the link and buy something, I get a small commission.
In years past I had hoped to make blogging a side business. While I never quite got there, I've at least made some spending cash through my blog. This was my slowest year of blogging ever and my daily readers have dropped to about 250 per day, but I still manage to pull in a little revenue.
I offer other websites advertising on my blog in the form of links and banners. This year I made $220 selling blog advertising. The Saipan Blog is a PR5 website and receives between 5,000 - 14,000 page views per month (5,051 in August 2011 and 14,087 in December 2010). That could be a lot of people seeing a link to your website, especially if it is a banner on the main page.
I host Google Adsense advertising, too. Most people are familiar with this form of advertising; it appears on almost all websites. I made $180 from Google this year.
What is perhaps a sad commentary on the world, I made about $50 from commissions of Dolphin Rape: It Happens t-shirts on Cafepress.com.
Last year I published a book called Our Northern Islands by Dennis Chan. Sales this year accounting for a whopping $46. I actually lost a lot of money on this one. Earlier this year, Dennis and I donated 100 copies of the book to three public elementary schools on Saipan. The point of this book was to tell stories about the Northern Islands. It is still a win.
Amazon.com also has an advertising incentive program. If someone follows the ad on this blog and purchases something, I get a commission. This year I made $25.
That's $500 I wouldn't have it it were not for this blog. Am I ready to quit my job and take on blogging as a full time job? No way. But it is nice having a few extra hundred dollars in my pocket.
