Marine monument council sets inaugural meeting

The Mariana Monument Advisory Council is holding its inaugural meeting for the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument on June 5-6, from 8:30am to 4pm at the Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan.

The public is invited to attend and observe the meeting. There will be opportunities for members of the public to provide comments to monument managers from 4pm to 5pm on both days.

The intergovernmental advisory council's objectives for the two-day meeting are for the MMAC members to adopt procedures to govern its activities, hear operational reports from monument managers from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service, and to provide initial advice and recommendations to both agencies for management planning.

Persons with disabilities needing reasonable accommodations to participate in the public meetings are invited to contact Angela Butsch at 1-888-812-5759 (voice) or 503-234-6263 (TTY) or angela_butsch@fws.gov.

For any updates on this meeting or additional information about the Monument and its two refuges, visit http://www.fws.gov/marianastrenchmarinemonument and http://www.fpir.noaa.gov/MNM/mnm_index.html.

Famous in Palau

I was interviewed by OTV a few months ago.  Here's the video.  I'm talking about sharks, of course.  This post is posted by me, and has no affiliation with any other person or organization.

Caption Contest X

The winner of Caption Contest IX is Brad!  He gets...nothing!

This morning I'm picking out the top 400 photos of our wedding and came across this gem.  I think it may be time for another caption contest.  Starring Brad.

Leave your captions in the comments of this blog (not Facebook).  The winner gets...nothing.

Six Months of Married Bliss

Edz and I have lasted nearly three Kardashes (72 days x3), which is just about six months.  We've spent all of three weeks together since the wedding, which kind of sucks, but we're hopeful that her green card will come through in the next few months.

4 miler in 4 weeks

In 1995 I ran the DPS Silver Streak in Saipan.  I probably ran it in about 24 minutes and I think I got third or fourth place.  I may even have a ribbon somewhere.

Fast forward 17 years.

I'm going to run the Silver Streak again this year.  The race starts at DFS in Garapan, streaks along beach road to Quartermaster Road, and back.  The entire course is just over 4 miles long.

I am behind in my 2012 in 2012 training.  I ran for a week after Tagaman, but for two weeks back in DC and three subsequent weeks in Fiji I didn't manage to run a single mile.  Lazy, lazy.

That gives me four weeks to train for four miles.  I'm going to switch up my training schedule.  Instead of the long 9 mile runs I was doing, I'm going to try for 5 mile runs in the morning and then again in the evenings.  A month from now, I'm hoping that results in four miles under 30 minutes.

President Anote Tong

I no longer put things on this blog related to my professional life, which is unfortunate, because I believe that many of my professional opportunities were ignited by this blog.  For example, I met Rick MacPherson through blogging, and now we work together.

So like I have said in previous posts, this blog has nothing to do with any organizations that I may or may not be affiliated with.  With that out of the way, I met the President of Kiribati this morning!

I was having breakfast with Manoa at a cafe in Suva and he just walked in.  I asked one of his staff if I could introduce myself, and this photo is the result.  How cool is that?

Caption Contest IX

I just spent a week in Fiji with conservation hero and fellow blogger Rick MacPherson.  Carlotta was here for a weekend, too.  It has been a while since I've done a caption contest on this blog.  The rules are simple:

Leave your caption in the comments section of the blog (not Facebook).  The winner gets....nothing.
