Summer's Over

Getting my Maui on in Kiribati
Well that went by quick.  All of a sudden the mornings are cooler and the sun is setting earlier and earlier each night.  Where did the summer go?

I guess my big accomplishment this summer is losing 25 lbs. At some point in April I noticed I was fat.  I decided I was going to drop a few pounds, and so like Forest Gump, I just went running.  Every day.

I kicked off the summer in New York at the United Nations ocean conference. I wasn't an official attendee, but I did help plan an ocean event for my employer in the lobby.  I was in charge of the entertainment.

It was an exciting week and I got to see conservation colleagues from all across the world. I even got to jam on my ukulele for a few hours with the President of French Polynesia.

Then I went to Kirimati Island in Kiribati to attend the Association of Pacific Island Legislatures, where in addition to giving a talk on culture and conservation, I went fishing.  I also stopped running (I don't want to be too skinny). I also got a really nasty cough while I was there that I wouldn't kick for about six weeks.  Also, there was more ukulele jamming.

In July I went to Saipan for a couple of weeks. Talked with  the community about the Mariana Trench, the monument and the sanctuary, but mostly the monument.  Also, ukulele again.

After Saipan I went to Cartagena, Colombia with Edz to accept a Distinguised Service Award from the Society of Conservation Biology at the International Congress of Conservation Biology.

At the start of August I spent two weeks at home for a staycation. Cleaned up my home office, sorted through things I'd been meaning to sort, fixed a few things, got rid of my fat clothes.  And I spent the rest of the summer in DC. getting back into the swing of working a desk job.
