Villagomez Family Tree

Friar Eric Forbes wrote a blog a few years ago about the roots of the Villagomez family on Guam, which extends to the founding of the Villagomez family on Saipan. Sometime before 1727, a Spanish sailor named Cristobal Villagomez gave up his life at sea, married a local girl on Guam, and fathered five children. More than 150 years later, around the time the Spanish started to allow Chamorros to move back to Saipan, Joaquin Salas Villagomez (my great-great-grandfather) moved from Guam to Saipan, married Rita Diaz Castro, and had five kids. One of the five is my great-grandfather Rafael "Laffet" Castro Villagomez. Laffet had nine kids, including my grandfather Ignacio Pangelinan Villagomez. The Laffets today are one of the largest clans on Saipan; our most prominent member is Governor Ralph Deleon Guerrero Torres. The other four Villagomez clans on Saipan -- Kiyu (Villagomez), Nando (Benavente), Marcilliano (Castro), and Pai (Santos)...

Indigenous Values and Ocean Policy in the Era of Climate Change

Photo credit: me I've given this talk twice, first at the annual meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science and more recently at a presentation for Indigenous People's Day at The Pew Charitable Trusts in Washington, DC. It pulls on ideas I've written about on the pages of this blog and my Twitter feed before, but folds it into a climate change framing of how Indigenous people can take UN recommendations and make them their own. Please allow me to quickly introduce where I am from. I am from the island of Saipan in Micronesia, part of the Northern Mariana Islands. The Native people are called Chamorro – there’s also a second Indigenous group who call themselves Refaluwasch. That’s my dad holding the guitar. I’ll let you guess which one I am. I grew up doing all the things island boys do, from farming, hunting, playing the ukulele, and fishing. Lots and lots of fishing. But I'm not going to lie, I also ...

10 Facts About Submerged Lands in the Marianas

Maug I've been stewing on this blog for months now. Back in February the Saipan Tribune ran an article about forming a commission to secede from the United States . This in of itself is something I support, forming a commission to understand the Commonwealth's relationship to the United States. In my travels across the Pacific and Caribbean I've visited American, Dutch, French, and English territories, as well as sovereign states and semi-sovereign states, and I've noticed that different political relationships and levels of sovereignty have their pros and cons. One of the benefits of our relationship to the United States is military protection and vast amounts of funding and economic opportunities. On the other hand, our governor will never receive the sort of global attention or have the same influence the president of Palau wields as a head of state. On the other hand, the Northern Marianas don't have to negotiate tuna treaties and Compact ...
