The Saipan Blog: Still the Most Popular Blog Ever

I was on the radio again this week.

Island Issues Radio ShowMike Tripp and I appeared on Harry Blalock's Island Issues radio program. We were invited to talk about creating community driven Ecotourism opportunities in the Marianas. The specific programs we are particularly interested in are improving the Marianas image and functionality as a diving destination, working with Beautify CNMI to create and market a system of parks & trails in the Marianas, and creating a coop of locally owned bed & breakfasts and home stays, whether for learning English, immersing the tourist in the local culture and way of life, or for giving the tourist a more affordable means of visiting the Marianas.

We had a meeting of this yet unnamed group on Wednesday during happy hour at Oleai Bar & Grille. About 50 people showed up. It was a little chaotic at first, but after only 90 minutes we decided to get to work on an online diving portal for the Marianas.

We're meeting again this Wednesday, same time, same place. Anyone is welcome to attend, so I hope to see you there. If you can't make it this Wednesday, stay tuned for more.

We, well, really just I, had a nice little event with some new and some old Marianas High School students yesterday. The MHS class of 1983 adopted a Flame Tree with the Beautify CNMI Adopt-a-Flame Tree program and yesterday we planted it on their former stomping grounds.

MHS Class of 2011I brought along a second tree and dedicated it to the MHS class of 2011, who had their first day of High School last Friday.

When they graduate in about four years, their tree should be about 20 feet tall.

MHS Tree PlantingYou can kind of make out the tree hiding behind the M and H on the banner.

Last night we had an impromptu Blogger Meetup at Porky's Bar. I went expecting to see Harry, Jeff, and Melissa sipping on Mojitos, but was shocked to see the bar full of bloggers and blogger friends.

Bree was there with her husband, daughter, daughter's friend, and all of the new teachers at Hopwood. Harry and Melissa were there, of course, Hozumi was there with Bryan, and Boni was there with her husband. Jeff also convinced his wife to come, along with EJ, and Brad. (Notice how non-bloggers don't have names?)

Of course, no night at Porky's would be complete without running into the Face of Drunken Evil, the Worst Person in the World, Bruce Bateman:
