Backyard Birding

american robinThere are a half dozen camphor trees in my Mom's backyard and there are scores of American Robins going to town on the berries this time of year.

Turdus migratoriusIn case you were wondering, finding the red belly of a robin in a sea of tiny green leaves is very difficult when you are colorblind.

Mariana Trench Diving and Blog Reading

An internet search of recent news stories about the Mariana Trench will bring up mentions of the 50th anniversary of the Trieste's decent to Challenger Deep, the only manned expedition to the deepest, darkest chasms of the Mariana Trench, and James Cameron's plans to repeat that feat sometime in the near future. The latest stories throw English Billionaire Richard Branson into the mix, as he has just announced his plans to reach the bottom of the Mariana Trench using a jetfighter-like submarine being built in the United States.

So now we have an American billionaire building a submarine in Australia and an English billionaire building a submarine in America. Are there any Australian billionaires out there interested in building a submarine in England?

******
The Marianas Visitors Authority should be salivating over this. The director of the two most successful films ever made and the owner of one of the world's most visible airlines are vying for the title of first human in fifty years to dive to the deepest, darkest point in the Mariana Trench all while a third party, the X Prize Foundation, is offering a $10 million prize for whoever gets their not first, but twice.

JUMP ON THIS BANDWAGON!

If I were in charge of the Marianas Visitors Authority or if I were the Mayor of Saipan or if I were the Governor of the Marianas, I would up the ante for the winners and I would link the feat to a call for conservation.

Anyone with Google Earth will see that the Mariana Trench lies within the borders of the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument, which includes a swath of ocean hit by overfishing, awash in marine debris and severely lacking in education and enforcement dollars. This could help raise awareness of these issues!

It would be a powerful visual to see that although humans have great difficultly reaching the most inaccessible parts of the planet, we've somehow managed to kill the creatures living there and dump our trash there.

And then I would up the ante for the X Prize Foundation's prize. In exchange for being the adventurer who raises awareness of the fragility of our marine environment, you get to be governor of the Marianas or Mayor of Saipan for a day or the Legislature of the Marianas will declare you Honorary Ambassador of the Mariana Trench to the Rest of the World or we'll dedicate a room at the governor's mansion to you which will always be available for your use or something else along those lines.

Can somebody do that please? Or should I just do it as the unemployed blogger living with his mom?

******
This morning I read theflipflopblog and looked at pictures of pretty clouds and read the Guamazing Advenutre and saw pictures from a couple from Guam's visit to Saipan (this is the blogger whose husband is the Navy pilot who helped rescue the residents of Alamagan after the typhoon back in September).

The other blogs all have posts about Governor Fitial's late night massage and I'm getting tired of reading those stories. Why hasn't he resigned yet?

Now We're Talking

The Associated Press has released another story about Rub-a-dub-dub-gate, this time about Fitial's subpoena to appear in front of a federal judge next month. Here is the story printed in the Honolulu Advertiser (USA Today carries the story, too):
Northern Mariana Islands governor subpoenaed
Associated Press

SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands — Federal prosecutors in the Northern Mariana Islands say the governor of the U.S. commonwealth needs to answer questions about letting a federal detainee out of prison to give him a massage.

Gov. Benigno Fitial has been subpoenaed to appear at a Feb. 17 U.S. District Court hearing to answer questions under oath. The attorney general's office of the U.S. commonwealth wants the hearing canceled.

U.S. Attorney Eric O'Malley said Tuesday that prosecutors will file a motion this week, arguing the hearing is necessary.

The detainee was Fitial's masseuse, who is facing charges in a human smuggling case.

Fitial has said he had the woman released and brought to the governor's residence Jan. 8 to relieve persistent back pain.
Now we're getting serious. It will be more difficult for the governor's minions to make excuses now.

Time to resign.

Adjusting to Life in America

Under the Pala Pala VIII - Adjusting to Life in America

Island Decisions and Island Opinions are made Under the Pala Pala

My arrival in America was very similar to my departure from America. I sold or gave away almost everything I owned, mailed a few boxes, and boarded a plane with only a vague idea of what I was going to do when I got off.

Who would have thought when I got off that plane in Japan in 2005 that I was starting down a path that would lead me to run for Mayor of Saipan? Certainly not me.

I guess that’s how life works: Plan to teach English to Japanese school children and end up planting trees, picking cigarette butts off of beaches, and fighting to protect the natural heritage of the Chamorro people.

So even though I find myself with no car, no phone, and no job, I have faith in what the future holds. And the future is brighter on this side of the pond.

One of my reasons for leaving Saipan was so that I could continue my education. I’m taking the first step towards reaching that goal by taking the GRE on Tuesday. Even if I don’t manage to get a grad school application out this spring, I’ll know I’ve at least got that test out of the way for when I apply to schools in the fall.

Wish me luck.

And on the employment front I have a few pokers in the fire. I will let you know as soon as I know where I end up.

Again, wish me luck.

Yet even as relearn how to participate in conversations focused on the stuff I own, I find myself telescoping back to Saipan.

Like you, I have been following every twist and turn in the saga of Governor Fitial’s late night massage. I’ve read the newspapers and the blogs and I’ve watched the local news and I have just one question. Can someone explain to me why he hasn’t resigned yet?

I have also been tracking the international newspapers as they commemorate the 50th anniversary of the only manned expedition to the bottom of the Marianas Trench. I was pleased to see Representative Greg Sablan’s plans for commemorating this feat in Washington, DC and Saipan, but was extremely disappointed to see news of Representative Madeleine Bordallo’s plan to change the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument’s management framework to include the Government of Guam, including benefits for the University of Guam and other institutions on Guam.

While I have no problem with Guam asking the federal government to help them manage their natural resources, I see this as a ploy to have all benefits of the marine monument be received by Guam, to the detriment of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Bordallo’s Bonitan Tasi bill fails to recognize that Guam’s waters are not included in the monument. The only marine environment protected by the monument lies hundreds of miles to the north of Guam in the Marianas and the portion of the monument that extends into the federal submerged lands around Guam does not protect a single drop of water. The monument does not affect Guam’s natural resources and Guam should have no say in how the monument in the Marianas is managed, nor should educational and management dollars be transferred away from the Marianas to Guam.

I am further disappointed that Bordallo would not have the Marianas co-sponsor this bill, seeing as our people are the ones to be negatively affected by it should it pass.

She managed to find other co-sponsors, so why not us? The bill is co-sponsored by Representative Sam Farr of California, Representative Lois Capps of California, Representative Mike Honda of California, Representative Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii, Representative Eni Faleomavaega of American Samoa and Representative Donna Christensen of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

So much for having a seat at the table.

I hope that Representative Sablan can educate the rest of the Congress on the history of the monument and how it came to be. This monument is something that the people of the Commonwealth asked President George W. Bush to create. We had hopes for educational opportunities, increased scientific research, and benefits to our local tourism economy. It would be a travesty to transfer all those benefits from the people of the Marianas to the people of Guam without even giving us the courtesy of asking first.

$10 Million Prize to be offered to reach bottom of Marianas Trench

There is a lot of news about the Marianas Trench this week because of the 50 year anniversary of Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard's dive to the deepest, darkest point in the ocean. Combined with last year's creation of the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument and Governor Fitial's late night massages, there is great potential for the Marianas to recieve a lot of international media attention in the upcoming months and years.

I've mentioned in several posts that James Cameron is developing a submarine to reach the bottom of the trench (has anyone called him yet?). Times Online builds on that story by announcing that the X Prize Foundation will soon be announcing a new challenge:
(L)ater this year the X Prize Foundation will offer at least $10 million (£6 million) for the first privately funded craft to make two repeat visits to the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench.

The initial X Prize was awarded to Burt Rutan for SpaceShipOne, the first private, reusable spacecraft. The foundation now aims to change deep ocean exploration by inspiring companies to develop technologies that will “significantly increase our ability to explore, gather information, and map the ocean’s depths”.
How awesome is that?

If we could get Bruce Bateman to take a break from leaving anonymous comments on the Saipan blogosphere, the Marianas Visitors Authority might actually be able to capitalize on this.

Marianas Trench Marine Monument 2009 Tour

This video photo montage of last year's expedition to the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument was made by Patrick Symmes and is hosted on Youtube:
Photos from a tour of the Marianas Trench Marine Monument completed in July 2009.

These remote waters under US jurisdiction were designated a no-fishing area in January, 2009, when George W. Bush created the world's three largest marine reserves during his final week in in office.

The Marianas Trench Marine Monument is about 70,000 square nautical miles. The volcanoes and 36,000-foot deep trench contain unique geological features, exotic sea life, and wreckage from WWII and before.

These pictures were taken on assignment for future publication in Outside magazine by Patrick Symmes, and are not for commercial use. Please support the marine monument by using them freely for educational purposes.

I hope that this expedition will make it into the pages of Outside magazine sometime this year.

Meet the Man, See the Watch

It has been 49 years, 364 days, and 5 hours since a living human being has been to the deepest, darkest chasms of the Mariana Trench, a feat that has only been accomplished once. The Saipan Tribune reports today that Representative Greg Sablan (I-Northern Mariana Islands) is helping to plan a number of 50th anniversary commemorative events for the dive in both Washington, DC and Saipan.

Rolex is getting into the mix with an event in California tomorrow where you can meet one of the men who traveled to the bottom and see the watch he strapped to the outside of his submersible before descending.
COSTA MESA, Calif. - (Business Wire) Retired US Navy Captain Don Walsh is one of only two people in history to have descended to the earth’s deepest ocean floor. Only one very special timepiece can make that claim. On Friday, January 22 at 11am, people across southern California have an exclusive opportunity to see both.

Rolex South Coast Plaza* will host a celebration of the historic 1960 exploration known as the “Deepest Dive.” Company executives and officials will gather to pay tribute to Capt. Walsh and unveil – for the first time ever in public – the authentic Rolex Deepsea timepiece that survived the nearly 36,000-foot descent inside the submersible bathyscaph TRIESTE piloted by the naval officer.

The public is welcome to visit the store throughout the day, and pictures and autographs will be permitted. Once inside, guests can meet Capt. Walsh and view the prototype Rolex watch that managed to survive a crushing 8 tons of pressure per square inch as it plunged to depths of the Mariana Trench – more than 7 miles beneath the ocean’s surface. The steel-encased timepiece made the dive strapped to the outside of the bathyscaph.

The event commemorates a trip that revealed the existence of marine life at depths many in the scientific community then considered impossible. Underscoring the degree of difficulty and risk, a dive of that scope has never been attempted or achieved since.

*Rolex South Coast Plaza is located 3333 Bristol Street, Costa Mesa, CA 92626, Carousel Court, Level 2. For more information about the anniversary celebration, please telephone the store directly at (714)241-8088.
It would be cool to meet this guy.

I have read that James Cameron, the director of Avatar, is going to attempt the dive sometime this year. The Nod Blog quoted him as saying, “My next goal is to dive to the deepest place under the sea in the world. It’s called the Mariana Trench and it’s in the Pacific Ocean, near the Philippines. It may take a while as we are still building some technology to help us get down there. It’s about 11,000 metres deep.”

Naturally the quote appears nowhere else on the planet besides that blog, so who knows if he really said it.

The Sun, a newspaper with probably less credibility than a blog, quoted him as saying, "We are building a vehicle to do the dive. It’s about half-completed in Australia."

So I guess we'll see if it's true. If it is, can I be on the boat?

Pretty please?

And while we're on the boat, can we swing up to Maug?

Money Wins Campaigns

The Saipan Tribune has an article about campaign spending in 2009. If you remember, the top four candidates in the Saipan Mayor race in order of votes recieved were (1) Don Flores, (2) Marian Tudela, (3) Angelo Villagomez, and (4) Roman Benavente....and then five others.

Want to take any guesses as to how much money each candidate raised and their relative position to each other?

According to the article the totals were:

(1) Don Flores: $8,906

(2) Marian Tudela: $7,983

(3) Angelo Villagomez: $6,909

(4) Roman Benavente: $3,121

Interestingly, the Saipan Tribune did not report on in-kind donations which were quite substantial in my campaign. They also do not report the amount spent on the campaign. They only report the amount raised.

I figured this was already true, but this helps solidify my opinion. If you want to run for office and win you need to raise more money than your opponents.

Mass Blogging

I was going to call this post Freezing My Mass Off, but decided to go with the title you see because this is my blog and I'll do whatever I want with it, thank you very much.

I am back down in not-so-sunny Florida after having spent the weekend in Massachusetts for a reunion, of sorts. Florida is much warmer this week than it was when I first arrived. Today I wore shorts and walked around the house barefoot all day. My toes would have gotten frost bite if I did that last week.

angelo villagomezIt was really cold in Massachusetts on the day we left; It was cold enough for snow. I'm not wearing a jacket in this photo because I am still on the back porch of Sharon and Bob's house. Am I brave or what?

It snowed about 4 inches the night before we left. I woke up to the sound of Uncle Bob clearing the snow from his driveway with his snowblower. What does it require to remove 4 inches of snow? An industrial snowblower, that's what!

Molly took us to the airport in Boston, but before we left Worcester she took us for a short spin around the old neighborhood.

angelo villagomez childhood houseThis is the house I grew up in. When I was little it didn't have the white picket fence, railings on the porch, or new siding. Missing, however, were two giant oak trees in the backyard. One of those trees supported my treehouse. Yes, Alex, I said MY treehouse. I miss my tree house. I also miss being young enough to have a tree house.

freeland street schoolThis is my Kindergarten, Freeland Street School. It is down the street from Sharon's house and I can remember walking there every day with the kid who lived across the street. I don't remember his name.

st peter marian central catholic elementaryThis is my old elementary school. It is also my Mom's old school. When she went there it was called St. Peter's. When I went it was called Worcester Central Catholic. Today it is called St. Peter-Marian Central Catholic. I went here from 1st - 7th grade and walked to school everyday rain or shine or snow.

st peters worcesterThis is our old church where I received my first holy communion, St. Peters. Come to think of it, my mom and her siblings and most of my cousins probably received their first holy communions here, too. This is the church where I figured out I was color blind. The priest said something about looking up at the blue ceiling and when I looked up I saw a white ceiling. I asked my Mom about it and she said I was just color blind like my grandfather.

maranville little leagueThis is my old little league, Maranville. I loved baseball, but hated my coach, Steve Lobo. I think he hated me, too, because I really, really sucked. There was a bare minimum all youth players had to play, two innings on the field and one at bat. Every single game I played exactly two innings on the field and got one at bat. Thanks, Steve, you've scarred me for life.

******
When we got to Boston Molly and Mom dropped me at the New England Aquarium while they went out for lunch. Kit Porter used to take Alex and me to the aquarium when we were little and it has got to be at least 20 years since I was there last.

penguinIt was just as enjoyable as an adult as it was when I was a kid.

Governor Ben Fitial - Not Ashamed

ben fitialIt has been nearly a week since the Marianas Variety reported that Northern Mariana Islands Governor Ben Fitial broke a suspected human smuggler under US Marshall custody who had been denied bail because she was a flight risk out of jail and had four police officers bring her to his mansion so she could administer a massage to sooth his back pain.

On Saturday the Saipan Tribune ran a story with the befuddling headline "Reactions mixed as blogosphere, news outlets pick apart 'massage' incident." If you read the article however, you would see that the mix of reactions range from wanting the governor to "resign, be recalled, or be impeached."

I wouldn't call those reactions mixed. I'd call them decidedly one-sided.

When asked how he would explain the issue to members of Congress in Washington, DC, Representative Greg Sablan went on record as saying, “I think it's not right but I'd also say it's an isolated incident and should not happen again.”

Isolated?

Unfortunately for him, were Representative Sablan to make such a representation he'd be lying. According to the Marianas Variety, this was not the first time Fitial busted this particular masseuse out of jail to administer to his back pain. She was picked up between March and June of last year for loitering and solicitation. In Garapan. Anyone who has ever been in Garapan after dark knows what that means.

And all the governor had to do was make a phone call and she was delivered to his doorstep.

This was not an isolated event; A clear pattern of deliberate abuse of power is beginning to emerge.

According to the Marianas Variety, the manager of the spa where the masseuse worked was completely unaware of what was going on at the governor's mansion.

This means the governor was either illegally employing a foreign worker, which is unethical at best, or if he didn't pay her, using his office to unjustly enrich himself, which is even worse.

He has also unjustly enriched himself with taxpayer dollars. He used Department of Public Safetly manpower, vehicles, and fuel to deliver a federal detainee to his residence and the Attorney General, an office which exists to prosecute criminals, is being used instead to defend one.

It has been nearly a week and there has been no teary-eyed apology, no admission of fault, and no sign of remorse. There hasn't even been a press conference to address the issue.

Governor Fitial has shamed himself, shamed his office, and shamed us.

Governor Fitial should resign.

Reunion, of sorts

The flight to Boston was uneventful. We checked in online, printed our boarding passes from home, and then Jim took us to the airport after he took the kids to school. I got bumped up to First Class and Mom takes every opportunity to tell anyone who will listen that I wouldn't trade seats with her.

I said it was against TSA regulations or something.

Molly met us at the airport. Here she is with Mom trying to figure out how to pay for the parking. At one point Mom dropped a bunch of coins on the ground and the guy standing behind them didn't even try to pretend to hide his impatience. He did a simultaneous soft stomp with his left foot, eye roll, and groan. I sat back and took pictures.

Stupid tourists.

On the way to Sharon's we stopped at my cousin Julie's restaurant to pay her a visit. We all had a bowl of clam chowder. I'd had a nice chicken cobb salad up in First (Mom had a bag of stale pretzels in coach) and wasn't that hungry, so I just ate to be social. Naturally I scarfed mine down before they had barely touched theirs.

Sharon had pizza for us at the house and some of the family came over. Sean came over with his wife, Laura, and son, Sam, Bobby came over with his girls, and Julie brought Carlos and one of her daughters.

This is the house where I spent a good portion of my formative years. It was fun watching a new generation of rugrats raise hell.

******
Saturday was the day of the birthday party. We carpooled down to New Canaan, Connecticut and arrived around 1 PM. To be honest, I didn't recognize some people. I know the older kids, but some of the younger kids I haven't seen since 1992 when they were about 5.

We took at least three rounds of obligatory groups shots.

About 50 years ago when my mom and her 17 other cousins were kids they took a photo on a staircase. This is the 21st Century version of that photo, with five missing cousins (two have passed away and three couldn't make it).

And these are the grandkids. None of the Massachusetts Walsh grandkids were there and only 4 of the 14 O'Connors make the drive down (or the flight up, as it were), but most of the Connecticut Walsh grandkids were there.

******
And one last thing...

There is an 80% chance that it will snow again tomorrow.

A Home Cooked American Meal

There's my family: Uncle Gene and Aunt Nora with my Mom, Kevin, and Catie. My stepfather Jim is taking the photo.

Even though we're Irish, Nora whipped up a killer Italian dinner last Sunday with sausage, meatballs, and cheese ravioli. Giovanni's at the Hyatt is great, but nothing beats home cooking.

It is good to be back.

It is Friday morning in Florida and I am getting ready for a flight to Boston and a weekend in New England. It is fitting that I am going to Massachusetts before my first week in America is out; Worcester was our first stop after we left Saipan in 1982.

My Mom's uncle, Uncle Hank, the brother of my grandmother, the oldest living member of our family (I think) is turning 89. The WOW Trinity (that's Walsh-O'Connor-Walsh) is getting together to celebrate his special day. The last time I was in Massachusetts was in 2004 for my cousin Sean's wedding. The time before that was 2003 for Uncle Jim's funeral (Uncle Hank and my grandmother's brother). The time before that? I'm not sure. We went to Cape Cod for Christmas one year; That might have been 1993, but I'm not sure. So this is basically my first visit in six years and my third visit in twenty.

One of the questions I've been pondering lately is whether I am going to live a life following in my mother's footsteps or my father's footsteps. You see, my father left Saipan for a time, returned, and then never left while my mother was in Saipan for a time, left and then never looked back. I find myself having to choose between a life in Saipan or a life in Florida and I am unable to do either.

For now I will content myself with home cooking. Last night we had roast beef and vegetables; Tonight I eat at Sharon and Bob's.

Guam on the Gov

KUAM, the TV station in Guam, has what I think is so far the best story on Rub-a-dub-dub-gate. It is only two paragraphs long, yet manages to capture everything:
GUAM - CNMI governor Benigno Fitial ordered a federal detainee locked up on alien smuggling charges to be released temporarily so he could get a massage.

According to KSPN2 News he had the masseuse released to relieve his persistent back pain. A federal judge has ordered a hearing into the incident.
I love the way they trivialize everything with "so he could get a massage." Brilliant, says I.

Rub-a-dub-dub-gate Re-dub-a-dub-scheduled

Wendy is reporting on her blog that the evidentiary hearing has been rescheduled.
CNMI Attorney General Buckingham filed a motion in the U.S. District Court of the Northern Mariana Islands today requesting that the evidentiary hearing be rescheduled. He stated that "the Commonwealth requires additional time to review the basis of the evidentiary hearing and to file appropriate pleadings with this Honorable Court on behalf of one or more of the individuals scheduled to appear, pursuant to subpoena, at the evidentiary hearing."

US Attorney Eric O'Malley did not oppose the motion.

Judge Alex Munson issued an order rescheduling the hearing for February 17, 2010 at 8:30.
Visit Wendy's blog for links to the motion and the order.

Wow. This is getting serious.
